Information We Collect

We collect information that you provide directly to us, including:

• Family name and hashed authentication credentials (passwords are SHA-256 hashed — we never store plain-text passwords)
• Personal information about family members (names, dates, relationships)
• Photos and images you upload
• Contact information you choose to add
• Device identifiers for ad personalisation (mobile only, subject to your consent)

How We Use Your Information

Your information is used to:

• Provide and maintain the Family Tree Browser service
• Allow you to create and manage your family tree
• Authenticate your access and protect your account
• Improve and personalise your experience
• Communicate with you about service updates

Advertising & Third-Party SDKs

We use Google AdMob to display advertisements within the mobile app (Android and iOS). AdMob may collect device identifiers and usage data for ad personalisation, subject to your consent. We do not serve ads on the web version.

Data Storage and Security

Your data is stored securely using Google Firebase (Firestore and Storage) with AES-256 encryption at rest and TLS in transit. We implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect against unauthorised access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction of your data.

Data Retention & Account Deletion

When you use the "Delete Family Account" feature within the app, all family member data — including names, photos, dates of birth, and relationships — is immediately and permanently deleted from our servers. Your family account login credentials (family name and passwords) are intentionally retained so that you can create a fresh family tree under the same account if you wish.

If you also want your login credentials fully removed, contact us at contact@hungerdata.com and we will delete your account entirely within 30 days.

Data Sharing

We do not sell, trade, or rent your personal information to third parties. Your family tree data is only accessible to:

• Users you authorise with your family credentials
• Administrators of your family tree
• Google Firebase (processor, for storage and database services)

Your Rights (GDPR / CCPA)

Depending on your jurisdiction, you have the right to:

• Access your personal data
• Correct inaccurate data
• Erase your data ("right to be forgotten")
• Restrict or object to processing
• Data portability
• Withdraw consent at any time
• Lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority

Cookies and Local Storage

The app uses local device storage (SharedPreferences) to cache your family tree data for performance and offline access. No third-party tracking cookies are used. On web, browser local storage is used for the same purpose.

Children's Privacy

Our service is intended for users aged 13 and older for the purpose of recording family history. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you believe we hold data about a child without consent, contact us at contact@hungerdata.com.
